If you’re getting around Korea by public transit, all you need is one card. Here’s everything you need to know about the T-money card — what it covers, where to get it, and how to use it like a local.
What Kind of Transit Cards Are There?#
Korean transit cards come in two main types.
① T-money Card (The Standard)
About 90% of travelers use this one. It works on the subway, buses, and taxis — honestly, just grab one of these and you’re set.
② Foreign Visitor Cards
- Korea Tour Card: Made for tourists, includes discounts at popular attractions
- T-money Travel Card: Combines with WOWPASS for currency exchange perks
If you just need to get around, T-money is the move. If you want discounts or easy currency exchange, check out the foreign visitor cards. Now let’s talk about where to pick one up.
Where Can You Buy One?#
| Location | Notes |
|---|---|
| Incheon / Gimpo Airport | Buy right after landing — most convenient |
| Convenience stores (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven) | Available nationwide, great for reloading too |
| Subway station vending machines | Grab one on the spot |
Pricing
- Card cost: approx. ₩2,500–6,000 (non-refundable)
- Reload: cash only, usually ₩10,000–50,000 at a time
- You can reload at any convenience store

Once you’ve got your card, here’s how to actually use it.
How Do You Use It?#
Subway#
Tap your card when you enter and again when you exit. Both taps are required for the fare to calculate correctly.

Bus#
Tap when you get on, and tap again when you get off. This is the most important rule for buses.
Heads up: If you forget to tap when you exit the bus, you’ll lose your transfer discount and get charged extra.

How Does the Transfer Discount Work?#
The transfer discount is the biggest perk of T-money. In Seoul and the greater metro area, you can transfer up to 4 times — that’s 5 rides total — all on one discounted fare.
Transfers work between:
- Bus → Subway
- Subway → Bus
- Bus → Bus (including local village buses)
Transfer conditions
- Transfer within 30 minutes of exiting (or 60 minutes late at night)
- Must use the same T-money card throughout (cash doesn’t qualify)
- Up to 4 transfers allowed in Seoul metro (5 rides total)
- Always tap when exiting the bus — miss it and the transfer chain breaks, extra charge applies
- Re-boarding the same route in the same direction doesn’t count as a transfer
Transfer limits by region
| Region | Transfer limit |
|---|---|
| Seoul & metro area | Up to 4 transfers |
| Busan | Up to 3 per day |
Paying cash means zero transfer discount — always use the card. Before we wrap up, here are some common mistakes to watch out for.
5 Tips Every Visitor Should Know#
- Always tap when getting off the bus — no tap = no transfer discount
- One card per person — you can’t share a single card
- Check your balance — the gate won’t let you through if you’re short
- Reload anywhere — just head to the nearest convenience store
- Refunds are possible — leftover balance can be refunded at a convenience store when you leave (some conditions apply)
One T-money card is all it takes to get around Seoul with ease. Grab one at the airport right after you land, load it up, and you’re ready to explore.
